SECDEFintely from a bygone era
I was invited to Maxwell AFB to deliver a top secret lecture on cyberspace warfare when Defense Secretary Robert Gates gave his "you flyboys don't mean squat to the war effort" speech just down the road from me.
Clearly this man has no clue about the importance of cyberspace warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan!
The United States Air Force is constantly sifting through Al Qaeda's laptop computers for vital intelligence on where they intend to strike next. It's just a simple fact that our Airmen don't need to put themselves in harm's way when they do this. They make life-or-death decisions every day on the cyberspace battlefield and then, yes, they get to go home and tuck their children into bed. It's just a simple fact of life in today's Air Force. A "cyberspace pilot" can remotely hack into Bin Laden's computer network from thousands of miles away.
So don't underestimate the United States Air Force. They take all of the actionable intelligence they gather and they email it to the Army brass as a series of PowerPoint slides. Thousands more soldiers would have died by now if the Air Force wasn't sitting around in blue suits at Barksdale AFB, the home of Cyberspace Command.
